The 3 years of development

Today marks the day Hjort Helten Beta was published a year ago. And the game has been in development over 3 years as of now.

For this anniversary, I've wanted to talk a bit about it's progress since then.

3 years ago, I've just started developing it using one of HeartBeast's platformer tutorials that came out recently.
There was no clear goal in mind, but just experimenting with platformers.

On June 2018, there was more of an idea, most basic functions and items already existed, and I was already experimenting with background objects back then:

The vines had quite a Terraria style back then, you could even cut through it:

Most enemy design started begin 2018, there was a period where I only thought about adding more enemies to have more variation, but eventually, I wanted to leave them as is, and see if I can already work on the levels with the current enemy designs available:

Then the Level design in late 2018, I started first linear, but I would've liked a Metroidvania more. I preferred to first make all the rooms, then fill up details afterwards, similair with artworks, where you start first with sketch, then lineart, color and details afterwards. That's why artworks were low priority for me. This is how it looked like 2 months before publish

And now I'm here in 2020, still in development, but can I see the ending approaching, most that's left now is the styling and artworks. including backgrounds and -objects. It's suprising for me to still hold on for this project for 3 years straight. But I'm glad where I am now.
